Call of Duty: Black Ops Preview

If you are new to gaming or simply living under a rock you may not have heard of the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops. Black Ops is the seventh installment of the CoD franchise. Black Ops centers a player in multiple areas including Vietnam and Cuba. This puts the player in multiple time areas around 1960 all the way up to 2010. This game is more centered on stealth features instead of the known running and gunning from the previous games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops puts you deep into enemy territory with just you and your squad fighting against opposing forces by using stealth and tactics to get the job done. The Black Ops multiplayer system has been upgraded from the Modern Warfare 2 to add new and exciting opportunities for players to test their skills in. Black Ops will include 50 ranks and prestige mode including the return of vehicles similar to Call of Duty: World at War, but will be added based on kill streaks instead of map specific items. Dedicated servers will also be returning to the Call of Duty series, and even though the rumors of Activision forcing users to pay for dedicated servers it has been confirmed that they will continue to be free.

Weapon unlocks will return based on rank and Activision has brought in In-game currency (called “CP” or CoD Points) that can be used to purchase unlocked weapons. Other new things that come in Black Ops is the implementation of an offline Bot multiplayer called Combat Training. This uses a different rank progression from online multiplayer, in which you can play alone or with friends. Also Tier 1 perks will force a change in a players look. Kill streak based weapons that are implemented in Black Ops will include a varied arsenal of a RC car bomb, the rc-xd, to a chain gun called the Death Machine and a missile launcher named Grim Reaper. Including other heavy artillery based items such as a gunship, mortars, and a SAM turret to take down gunships.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer system includes new time limited challenges called Contracts to earn CoD points. There are three contract categories which are Mercenary, Operations and Specialist. Mercenary rewards players for kills and kill streaks as Operations is for team players and Specialists are for unique play styles. This has also brought on a gambling system called Wager Match where players can bet CoD points for the winner. The top three wagers will split the winnings and this mode includes four new game types:
• One in the Chamber – Players will be limited to pistols and knives. The player starts with only one bullet in the pistol and a total of three lives. If you do kill someone you will receive one bullet.
• Sticks and Stones – Players start with a crossbow, a ballistic knife and a tomahawk. If a player is killed with a tomahawk they will be bankrupted.
• Gun Game – This mode is based of the old CS:S mod Gun Game. Upon a certain amount of kills you receive a better weapon. First person to progress through the weapons wins. If you are knifed you lose a level.
• Sharp Shooter – All players start with the same randomly generated weapon. Weapons will cycle but all players will have the same one.

Black Ops also has a brand new weapon customization weapon. Players will be able to attach custom made emblems and decals onto their weapons as well as attaching custom targeting reticules. Players will also be able to edit, rotate, and scale images to place on all of the weapons they’ve unlocked.

Lastly Black Ops will include Theater Mode, this will allow players to record clips and create screenshots to tag and share with friends online. The camera can be switched between first and third person perspectives as well as a free roam option.
